First recommendation:  Take your time and carefully consider any cleaning, chemical treatment and trimming steps you are planning to use on a specimen.  Once you have applied a treatment or attempted a trim, you can't go back.  If possible, try the chemical treatment on a duplicate, low value specimen to assess whether you obtain the result you desire.
